Hi All,

I realize as of late that I've become sporadic with my blog. I've focused more on the YouTube Channel over the past months. But then I would feel bad about neglecting the blog. But I didn't want to simply post the video I did on YouTube on the blog. I wanted the few devoted blog readers I have to have new and fresh content (at least most of the time). At the same time, I also realized that I wanted to write about other things than hair.

So, long story short, I'm essentially discontuing Haute and Hair and launching another blog, The Trendy Socialite. This blog will have a variety of topics and (hopefully) chock full of pictures and tips, not only to entertain but to help you in your life. I read and/or find all sorts of information (some useful and some not :)) and I would like to share it with you (even the useLESS information LOL).

So I hope you will join me over at The Trendy Socialite. For those of you that have followed Haute and Hair in the lean and grand times, thanks so much!!!! I hope if you google followed me, you will follow me over at The Trendy Socialite.

I will probably keep this site up for a while as I may refer to old blogs on the new blog.

Things Every Well Prepared Woman Needs to Carry (Part 1)

On my YouTube channel, I've started doing a series on things every well-prepared woman should carry with her. I've already gotten enough for 2-3 more videos...thanks to by BFF over at A Life of Style, Kim, and a couple of my YT subscribers. Here is a recap...

$20 in cash: My mom told me to carry cash since I was old enough to go anywhere! She reminded me of it when I started dating and I do it to this day. Even in this technological age, sometimes you just need cash. Whether it's to leave a tip or because a small business owner only accepts cash or because you are stranded somewhere and need to catch a bus or cab home....keeping a small amount of cash (especially women) is a MUST-DO!

Clear Nail Polish: Clear nail polish has a myriad of uses and can come in handy on the run.

Stop runs in panty hose
Seal envelopes
Waterproof matches (useful if you go camping *shrugs*)
Add shine to costume jewelry and belt buckles
Thread needles (dip thread, rub between fingers. Dries quickly and hardens to make threading easier)

Spare Earrings: Can't tell you the number of times I've either lost an earring or it broke. Having a spare pair of earrings is a life saver for me, because I'd rather go home than walk around without earrings! LOL I recommend either a pair of diamond studs or pearl earrings. Just remember to put them back in your bag after you've worn them.

A Pair of Sunglasses: This is for my inner celebrity! They are a must-have when I travel...especially by plane. As soon as the doors open to the airport terminal, on go the shades. They come in handy when I travel early in the AM. Sunglasses (especially if they are big enough) and clear lip gloss give an illusion of a totally made up face.

Mini Sewing Kit: This is pretty self explanatory. Always good to have in case a button pops off or a hem rips. I admit I don't routinely carry this, but Kim convinced me to do so. You can purchase them from your local dollar store.

Travel Toothbrush and Toothpaste: Once again pretty self-explanatory. Sometimes gum and mints don't cut it. And you (and no one around you) wants to smell garlic breath all night LOL.

Hey all!

I had my hair colored on Friday and ever since then, I've been itching to wear my hair out. If you don't know I've been on a protective hair & hide your hair challenge until my nappiversary on June 26. For the most part I haven't worn my hair out in public much since the end of February.

I decided to wear my hair out today. Last night, I DC'd for an hour (baggy, no heat) with

Condish (don't ask me what kind I forgot LOL)
Olive Oil
Silk Amino Acids (SAA)
Wheat Germ Oil
Jojoba Oil
Baking Soda

Man my hair was super soft afterwards! So I co-washed with ORS Replenishing Conditioner and Kera Care Condish for Color Treated Hair. I let it air dry about 50 percent. Sprayed and moisturized with my special "juicing" agent (um, S-curl activator LOL) and did fat two-strand twists all over. Here are the results....

It's in a relatively low puff (trying to make sure no hair brushes clothing). Made the headband myself...

Here's an upclose of my texture...I finally have some! LOL

I think I will go with this style for the remainder of the week. It feels good to have my hair out for a change.

My Adventures in Protective Styling....Wigs

I have started a personal "Hide My Hair" and "Protective Style Challenge" until my 1 year Nappiversary on June 26. The first month of the challenge was spent in Kinky Twists

While in Kinky Twists, I missed having access to my hair something terrible! Yet I still wanted to be able to honor my protective style challenge. So the next logical solution was to tock wigs for a while. This could give me many styling options yet also allow me to play in, massage, deep condition, twist, etc. my own natural hair.

While relaxed, I could basically do no wrong when it came to rockin' half wigs. I didn't really rock full wigs or lace fronts, but half wigs were my besties! So when I decided to wear wigs for the next part of my protective style challenge, I thought I wouldn't have any problems...well I was wrong LOL.

I had the brilliant idea of rocking lacefronts. So off I go to the BSS. I had a couple in mind that I wanted, but they didn't have the colors I wanted or needed for my color treated hair. So I ended up buying two lacefronts by Freetress Equal: Lisha and Jada.

Easter Sunday I rocked Lisha...and quite frankly, you couldn't tell me anything! I thought I was too cute LOL So cute that I decided to wear Lisha the next day to work. But as I kept looking at Lisha, it just didn't look right. So I took the picture below and went to my resident gurus over at Long Hair Care Forum and boy did they give me an eyeful! LOL

My main problem was with the hairline. It was too.....PERFECT! And my Nikko's cousins definitely let me know that...one said it looked like "plastic Barbie doll hair" LOL So Miss Lisha is now at the bottom of my drawer...probably never to see the light of day again.

The next day I decided to wear Jada...I ended up cutting it.

Much better right?!?!?! I know...much more realistic hairline. But I wasn't really feeling how the curls looked. Something looked very "Sophia from the Golden Girls" about them. So off to the BSS I went on Saturday. And it was there I fell in love with the Freetress Nia Girl wig.

When I tried it on in the BSS, the color the fullness, the texture...it was just me! Sunday, I wore Nia Girl and OMG!!!!!!! You almost couldn't even talk to me...LOL I made it pretty big, which I LOVE (especially compared to the pic)! If ever I could envision what my natural hair will look like when it grows, this is IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also bought another half wig by Freetress, Celtic Girl. I saw this on a couple of websites and saw one girl's review of it, so I thought I'd try it.

Today I'm wearing Celtic girl. It's a much tamer version of Nia Girl so it fits better at work. So it looks like I have "weekday hair" and "weekend hair."

4 wigs, $175 later I think I have a couple of winners now. I will probably order back ups of these two so I can have them in constant rotation.

There aren't that many style videos on kinky twists surprisingly. I did get some inspiration from from loc videos on YouTube. But thought I'd put up a few with my kinky twists since they are a popular look.

Trendy Traveler

As I was in the airport today I noticed some stylish travelers. Airport travel attire can sometimes be tricky as it needs to be functional and comfortable, yet if you’re like me, you want it to be stylish. And believe me, there is a fine line between functional and frumpy when it comes to travel attire.

I think there are a few style options you can choose for travel:

Leggy European: A relatively monochromatic (perhaps with a splash of color) look with leggings as the foundation.
Trendy Globetrotter: Chic and savvy athletic wear that does not have the frumpiness of sweats. This look is very tricky and quite frankly, most people just do not get it right!
Jeanious Jetsetter: Dark-rinse jeans as a foundation for a casually sophisticated look.
Dressed to Deplane : Comfortable and fashionable dresses that allow you to deplane immediately have fun!

For my most recent business trip, I chose the “Leggy European.” For my departing trip, I wore

Off-the-shoulder heather gray sweater from Old Navy
Black tank
Black leggings
Black pashmina scarf
Black, gray and white plaid ruffle trench
Dark shades (yes even at 7 AM)
Black patent leather flat loafers
Chunky silver necklace from Forever 21

I was all set!

*~*TIP: When flying, pack your jewelry (belts too) in a zip lock bag and put it on once you pass through security checkpoints. This will save time and aggravation.*~*

I don’t wear makeup while travelling, so the shades are a good camouflage. I do throw on clear lip gloss, so my shades and lipgloss resemble a fully “made up” face. :)

If the Sartorialist would have been around, he definitely would have snapped my picture.

For my return trip home, I wore

Black leggings (yes, the same ones…I shower—don’t judge me! LOL)
A black tank (I brought two)
My all-time favorite Victoria’s Secret wrap sweater in a beautiful raspberry shade
Same black pashmina scarf
My favorite multi-colored cross with matching earrings
Dark purple patent leather mary-jane flats
Dark shades

In the airport, I saw a couple of women who really did look effortlessly chic, yet comfy.

One petite traveler (she couldn’t have been more than 5’4) wore:

Khaki jacket
Black “babydoll” top
Dark rinse jean capris
Flip flops (the least favorite part of her outfit, but I gave her a pass)

More Forever 21...

Her hair was in a cute messy side ponytail and she looked absolutely adorable.

The other traveler that caught my eye wore:

Khaki jacket
Black crewneck t-shirt
Dark rinse straight-leg jeans
Black flats (with a bow)

The thing that I noticed about her outfit was the cutest pink sequined tote she was carrying. No way could anyone mistake that for their bag. It also matched her pink and brown luggage she carried.

With just a little effort and thought, you can set a style that is comfortable, yet attracts compliments and style watchers (such as myself).

Haute & Hair: It's Not an Illusion...Illusions Cosmetics Event in Durham, NC

I covered my first beauty event last night....let me tell you I could get used to this!

Illusions Cosmetics, under the artful conception of sisters Janice & Denise Tunnell, hosted an amazing "Meet & Beat" Saturday, March 13, 2010 in Durham, NC. Thanks to my ever connected bff, Stylish Living, I connected with Denise to cover the event.

Illusions Cosmetics, created in 1998, has received acclaim from celebs such as Taraji Henson, Niecy Nash, Megean Good, Kerry Washington and Vivica Fox. The line started with lip gloss and has since expanded to foundation, anti-shine serums, pressed & loose powders and facial cleansers for men.

In watching the twin make up artists work their magic one of their attributes that most impressed me was the personal attention they gave to each client. Selling their products were secondary to answering the client's questions and explaining to them techniques to help them achieve professional results at home. For me, that's what makes me a repeat customer is when you share tips not just try to push products.

I'm in the market for a new foundation, so I wanted to see what color matches my skin. Denise tested a foundation and it was light yet provided great coverage. I'm ordering the foundation tomorrow.

I also received a great swag bag with the following:

The Beauty Killer: Dehydration

That's a scary picture to the left, isn't it?!?!?! Well that could be the effects of dehydration. And quite frankly, that's how I've felt I've looked for the past few weeks.

Out of sheer laziness (too lazy to go get water from Wally world and bring them to my office), I have not had my usual daily intake of water (at least 60 oz.) in over 2 months.

Oh I've been drinking it up...soda, Shirley Temples (my fave), flavored lemonades, tea, coffee...everything BUT water.

I noticed two days ago how dark my under eye area looked. It looked like I hadn't slept in days or that someone was going 3 rounds with me in a boxing ring--and I was losing. My skin was looking flat, dull, lifeless...that's because I was literally killing it! All the new regimens I was using were of little to no effect because I was depriving my body and skin of the one thing it's almost 70% comprised of...water.

Yesterday, was my lowest point! I am not sure how I made it through the work day. My lower back was hurting, I was bloated, fatigued, eyes burning, etc. So on my way to church, I stopped by Starbucks and purchased my coffee and a bottle of water (hey, change doesn't always happen instantly LOL). That first bottle of water felt good down in my sanctified soul! Whoo hoo, I tell ya. You know how that wilted plant revives after getting some much needed water? That's how I felt.

So on my way to work this morning, I stopped by Wally world and purchased two cases of water (plus some other staples for my office). I'm on my 2nd bottle of water and plan to drink at least 2 more before the end of the day.

I am quite sure most of my readers are regular water drinkers...so this message is probably not needed. But I am now a believer in what water can do and the havoc the lack of water can have on your body.

I've been remiss in keeping my blog readers informed about the Summer Style Series, S3. Not because I don't love you, because I do! But mostly because I didn't want to be cheesy or lazy and just embed the videos here. I wanted to give you a bit more commentary at least about the videos. But that takes quite a bit of time...time I'm struggling to find right now. But I promise you, as I can post things, I definitely will. In the meantime, please feel free to check out the series here. Haute and Hair: Protective Styling Until My One-Year Nappiversary

I'm still trucking along on my natural hair care journey. I've had some good days, bad days and some hills to climb...but as the song says, I won't complain :).

Well, my only complaint is that my hair isn't growing at the rate I feel it should or as it has grown in the past. So in preparation for my one-year "nappiversary" I plan to wear my hair in protective styles and basically "hide my hair" until June (hopefully). I will say, I already miss my curls, but hopefully they will be longer and poppin' when I reveal my hair for my nappiversary!

So to the left <--- is what I'm rocking right now...Kinky Twists. They are a little over a week old. The first week was a challenge because they itched so badly! But after consulting my trusty LHCF and YouTube, I decided to wash them. And my scalp is grateful! Before washing, I was not sure if I was going to make it even a month, especially not the two months I was hoping to keep them in. But now a month is going to be doable (I like to change styles so often, I can't commit to anything past a month right now :).

I'm working on a style tutorial on the style I'm rocking. It's so simple! Ten minutes and you're done!

I love this look on Monica! It's a great Saturday look that can literally take you from morning to evening. Brunch, shopping (as she is doing), drinks & tapas and even a late evening event (with a quick change of accessories).

The older I get and the busier my schedule gets, the more I love looks that I can put together in 3 pieces or less LOL. That's why I ADORE dresses. This is very similar in ease to me.

I also like the option of the scarf. Since I'm new to the whole "strapless" dressing, this allows me to feel a bit more covered, yet still shows the style of the outfit. Plus it's great for chilly restaurants or for the cool evening air.

Hey everyone...

I apologize for neglecting the blog...YouTube has kept me busy! But I will try to balance writing with recording videos. Now if someone can get me another 3-4 hours in my day, I'll be doing a 100! LOL

Anyhoo, I wanted to share a couple of pictures with you. Below is my hair when I began my "healthy hair journey" back in December 2007.

Essentially I am back where I was when I started my healthy hair journey a little over two years ago (my layers are a bit shorter than 2007). All things considered, I think it's not a bad place to be.

I can't wait to post pics on my Nappiversary in June. I am debating whether or not I'm going to "hide my hair" until then or not. I tend to get bored really easily with protective styling, so I don't know. Keep checking back for the latest in the ongoing saga that is called "My Healthy Hair Journey!"

I love my heels as much as the next Socialite, but there have been a few days where I longed to pull a pair of flats out of my bag! Well my beauties, look no further...

Hollywood Fashion Tape (the creators of what I call "Dang, I wish I thought of that!") has the Hollywood Fashionista Flat. I bought a pair yesterday at a boutique. For $15 they are a great addition to my Trendy Socialite stash.

They weigh almost nothing. They come in a cute, pink bag and in a matter of seconds you can have instant comfort! They are small enough to fit in your purse, briefcase, and even some evening bags.

They come in black and silver and fit shoe sizes up to a 9.5

I started a new segment on my YouTube Channel, A PJ in her PJs. This segment is devoted to reviewing products. Enjoy the first segment on Benefit's California Kissin'.

Overall, I like this product. I love the tingly feeling and the taste. Not so crazy about the price...it's a bit expensive for something I wear underneath and over my lipstick/lipgloss.

If it's the flavor you like, I'm sure there are some drugstore brands that will deliver the same results.

Day 3 of Twist Out

I'm feeling the "chunkiness" of today's twistout...

What did I do?!?!?

I arrived home at 1 AM from Memphis (that is a long a*# drive LOL)...I had thought I would wear a puff today (quick and simple), but I really like the twist out and thought that hairstyle would better go with what I was planning to wear.

So while I was unwinding (I still couldn't go right to sleep despite being exhausted) I sat in bed and did LARGE two-strand twists. When I undid them this morning, this is what I came up with. I picked it a little to blend, sprayed with shine and I was done in 10 minutes....I sorta like that notion.

I like my hair fresh, so depending on how I feel when I get home, this may get washed and done over. But at least now I know that I can hold on to it for three days and revive it with larger twists!

My Secret to Two Strand Twists

I've fallen in love with 2 strand twists. I tried them when I first BC'd but wasn't as satisfied as I have been the last two times I've done them.

For me, the difference has been the use of Hawaiian Silky 14-1. It has made my hair soft and silky and moisturized.

I'm back!!!!!

I tell ya, this semester has been a beast (I work at a university)! But classes ended Tuesday and the kiddies are on their way outta here for a few weeks! Thank God!

Anyhoo, I have loads to share with you in the coming weeks. Many are curious about my natural hair journey. I will probably vlog about that in the next day or so...cuz I have this cool new Flip camera that I'm dying to try out...So I will probably do some vlogging for a while and upload it here.

I also plan to do a review and some tutorials on the 42 Double Stack Matte Shadow & Blush Palette that I just purchased from Coastal Scents. I'm very excited!!!!! Here it is...

My friend got married yesterday (yes, on a Tuesday). This was my first "formal" event since going natural (unless you count going to church). I wasn't sure how I wanted to style my hair, but I felt "BIG HAIR" would be appropriate for such a grande occassion. :)

I thought my TWA had styling limitations since I cannot put it in a ponytail to attach a phony puff. But where there's a will, there's a way. So after experimenting a little...here's my faux updo on my TWA...

Naomi Sims passed away last week...

For those of you that aren't familiar with her, chances are you saw her work on any stylish wig-wearing family member. You were officially considered "balling status" if you rocked a Naomi Sims wig. For people of color, Naomi Sims was the cadillac of hair. Don't believe me, ask your grandmother or older aunt.

But before her infamous line of wigs and certainly before Naomi Campbell, Tyra, Alek Wek, Iman and Beverly Johnson, there was Naomi. There are numerous tributes around the net that can certainly give more justice to Sims than I can...but just know that a true icon of style is no longer with us...but her style lives on.

Two-Strand Twistout August 2009

I'm on Day 3 of a Two Strand Twistout I did Saturday night. The definition is bananas! It's as curly as Day 1 but getting fuller...

In order to maintain, all I do is throw on my satin bonnet at night and re-moisturize with my mixed buttercreme in the AM. A shot of shine and I'm done in about 5 minutes...and curl definition that lasts all day, actually multiple days!

One Month Natural

I've been natural for a little over a month now. I have to say I LOVE it! I've only had one near breakdown and that's regarding moisture balance. But I think I'm on the other side of that. Here are comparison shots...

Along the way, I've learned a few things...

My hair doesn't like Raw Shea Butter (unless it's melted and mixed in with something else)
EVOO is still the best overal moisturizer for my hair (and it has multiple uses)
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the smell of freshly washed hair
Men LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the smell of freshly washed hair LOL
I won't straighten my hair nearly as often as I thought I might. I adore my texture
People at work were a lot more complimentary (at least to my face) than I thought
I don't have to justify my hair to others (not like I was going to anyway)
Every texture of hair has it's advantages and disadvantages
I shouldn't have cut dow the back when I first BC'd as much as I did...
I have to be much more intentional about moisturizing than I did when I was relaxed
I love my coils, I love the softness, I just LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!

Here's what I mix together to deep condition...

Nexxus Humectress

Giovanni 50:50

Olive Oil

It is applied with a color applicator brush

Apply a plastic cap and sit under dryer or electric heating cap

I sit under heating cap for 45 minutes to an hour. I usually DC on dry hair, so I co-wash after. If I clarify, then I DC on wet hair after clarifying.

In the next day or so I'll post a Curly Girl tutorial...

When I first made the decision to go natural, I was a little leery because I didn't know what my natural texture would look like. I was also leery because I didn't know if I had the face or the style to carry it off. Let's face it, not every style is for everyone.

Which brings me to this little gem that I found on Bossip.com. This is the Solange (Bey's li'l sis) that we remember...

Solange apparently has taken a sharp right turn into the world of Naturality and rock her own hair...

Um....don't really care for it on her (maybe it's the shades) but I'm glad to see she's not ashamed to rock her natural do...

I don't love it, but I don't hate it either...what about you?

The Curly Girl (CG) Method Works for Me!!!!

I posted last week about hair feeling dry and got some great feed back. But I still wasn't really satisfied with the curliness (or lack thereof) of my hair if I didn't twist it. I wanted something that if pressed for time I could wash and go and still look good. So I started researching the Curly Girl CG method and decided to try it. Here's what I did...

DC'd on dry hair with EVOO and Giovanni SAS for 1 hour under electric heating cap
Co-washed with Giovanni SAS and Nature's Gate Jojoba Condish
On the first co-wash I put Nature's Gate in a color applicator bottle (pointy tip) to apply directly to scalp to cleanse
2nd co-wash I use Giovanni SAS and apply to hair
Rinse with cold water
Lightly pat hair with T-shirt (towel can cause frizz)
Apply Giovanni Direct Leave In
Cover with plastic cap for 10 minutes
Apply Black Earth Crinkles & Curls Foam
Apply Coconut Oil
Apply Raw Shea Butter
Cover with plastic cap for one hour (allow moisture to set)--OPTIONAL depending on my time
Uncover
Define curls and pre-style (finger coils and smoothing edges--SEE PICS)
Air Dry (for me I co-wash at night and dry overnight)
Finish styling (for me that is defining curls and pulling pieces, moisturize and seal with oil)

Here are wet pics after I've defined and pics of what it looked like this morning.

Styled....

I like unkept, wild, messy hair...so I really like this. It's an easy do and I can spritz it with moisturizer during the day and it not come undone. Takes about 10 minutes to get the pieces like I want, but I'm set for the day. My hair is soft, fluffy and has some sheen to it without it being jheri-curl looking. LOL

This will probably be my go-to do til the back grows enough for my next style (shhhhhh)...LOL

The Big Reveal...The Natural Me!!!!!

I had planned to transition for a long time...at least a year and mini-chop along the way. Well plans changed and I changed my mind. Making my hair decisions seem snap to other people, but they are pretty methodical for me. I've been researching natural hair for a while (about a year)and examining my own texture and stalking (I mean looking) at other people's fotki's and reading about their experiences.

Now mind you, I haven't seen my natural texture EVER in life. I got a relaxer when I was 5 years old. So relaxed hair is all I've every known. So while I was confident that this was what I wanted to do, I was still a bit hesitant about what my natural hair would look like.

One Friday I decided on a "whim" I wanted to BC. I hadn't rollerset my hair the night before and it was literally standing on top of my head...

I flat ironed and did the ol skool patting it down as best I could. I talked to my mom's friend (hairstylist) and asked her to cut my relaxed ends off. She's always rocked short hair, brush cuts, etc. so she wasn't at all shocked about what I wanted to do.

Soooooooooo on June 26, 2009 I BC'd and here are the results...

Luckily it didn't feel like steel wool...the "good" genes of my parents came out...LOL

I love it and I'm getting lots of compliments. I wore short hair in my 20s so it isn't too drastic for me.

TRANSITION UPDATE: Hair Setback or Transition Blessing in Disguise

Sooooo I got braids on May 29, 2009. They were for my vacay and I thought I would wear them through July 4th holiday. Well that didn't work out as planned. The quality of hair wasn't the best, my BSS SUCKS!!!!!! So I decided to take them out...that's when the problems happened. I had the darndest time taking them out and was getting so frustrated that I started cutting them out haphazardly so I could go to bed. As a result, I cut my own hair TREMENDOUSLY...

It's my own fault, so I take the L for this. I've never really tripped about my hair being "too" short, I wore short hair for most of my 20s. But since I've been on the hair growth thing, this would be seen as a MAJOR setback. But as a transitioner, I wonder if this could be a blessing in disguise.

So essentially, I went from this...

to this...(Looks alot like the plant huh? LOL)

Here are some other pics to give you an idea of the length...

So I began to think whether or not I should go ahead and BC and get it over with. For the past two days I've been looking on the forum and at YT trying to psyche myself up for possibly doing a BC. So I wet a section of hair (the section I chose was probably not the best indicator of how much I would have to cut, but I had to go back to work) to see how much NG I had, here's what I saw...

After consulting the women on LHCF I decided to try another style before I BC'd. So last night I rollerset my hair. Here's what I did...

DC'd with no heat with Mane and Tail and Cantu Oil
Co-washed with Aussie Moist and Mane & Tail
ACV rinse
Rollerset with small rollers (1/2" I think--they are green) using rollerset mix
Dryer for 45 min (only upside to shorter hair--shorter drying time LOL)
Slept in rollers

Here are some shots of my wet texture before I rollerset...

This morning I unrolled and styled...here are the results...

I really like this style. For me, it's somewhat of an indication of what life as a natural will look like. I pinned the front slightly off center because that was all I could think to do at the time. I'm going to look online today for some other styling inspirations.

I think this is going to be my transition style for the next month or until I am ready to BC. I think next week I will go ahead and BC below my ear, some of that is already natural from what I can tell. I will keep the height and fullness at the top and keep this style for a while.

I must say that while co-washing my hair, I LOVED the texture. It was soft and curly...I can't wait until it's all natural.

ACV is THA TRUTH!!!!!

Ok, so I've been feeling "some kind of way" about transitioning. My texture all of a sudden felt real jacked up and I was feenin' for some creamy crack. I just wanted my bangs to lay down...is that to much to ask for?!?!?!? LOL

So I've been reading on LHCF and Mane and Chic about ACV rinses. ACV=Apple Cider Vinger The users claimed that it left their hair super shiny and bouncy. Now how exactly ACV which should be pretty acidic leaves hair shiny and bouncy, I didn't know. And I was skeptical. But there have been very few things (none really) that I've tried from LHCF that didn't work on my hair, so I thought...why not?

So off to the health food store I went yesterday and bought Bragg's Organic ACV

Here is what I did...

DC'd using the home steam and the 15-10-10 methods on dry hair with ORS Replenishing, EVOO and 2 other conditioners from Sally's I can't remember the name of

Co-washed with Aussie Moist (the jury is still out on this condish, but I guess it did ok)

ACV final rinse with a color applicator bottle (1 oz. Bragg Organic ACV to 4 oz. water)

Plastic cap for 5 min while showering

Lacio Lacio (as leave in), Coconut Oil and MN mix

Rollerset on pink magnetics with Rollersetting Lotion mix (Aloe vera juice, water, EVOO, Castor Oil, Africa's Best Oil--my hair needs some oil and moisture)

Hooded Dryer for 90 minutes

Unrolled hair and applied Coconut Oil to ends

Re-rolled with satin foam rollers (can't sleep on magnetics)

Sleep

Style in the morning

Here are the results...

Unfortunately I'm working today so I had to take these with my camera phone, so you may not be able to see the shine, but trust me it's there. My hair is super soft, shiny and swingy.

I know for a lot of LHCF sisters you can't use as much oil as I did, but my hair loved it. I shouldn't have to put anything in my hair til next wash day.

ACV will definitely be part of my reggie going forward!

Haute & Hair: Answering a couple of questions....

I had a couple of questions regarding my last post about my transition, so I decided to answer them here...

Remember, I'm just sharing my experiences, so please feel free to comment if you have other opinions or experiences.

Why use diluted shampoo?

I learned this technique from Mane And Chic's blog. Most shampoos can strip the hair of its natural oils which make it dull and lifeless. Many of my LHCF sisters do no shampoo, they do what we call co-washing. Which is basically where you "wash" your hair with conditioner. Conditioner has some mild cleansers in it, so you still cleanse your hair, but you also moisturize and condition it at the same time.

However, there are times when you may have product build up or just want to thoroughly clean your hair. If you had water to your shampoo and pour it in a color applicator bottle, you can pour it directly on your scalp (which is actually what you are trying to clean) and minimize any stripping on your hair.

Do you take hair vitamins?
Yes, I take hair vitamins. Here is a list of the vitamins I take.

What type of rollers do you use?
I use different rollers, depending on the look I'm trying to achieve (how curly). I have 1" rollers, 2" rollers, 1/2" rollers, and black satin foam rollers.

Haute & Hair: Drumroll please....I Will Transition to Natural Hair!!!!

So I have decided to take that plunge and stretch my relaxer indefinitely with the ultimate goal of transitioning to natural hair.

I've been toying with the idea of transitioning for about 6 months now. My fascination with natural hair began before that while watching Mane and Chic transition. Her hair was goregous and she didn't use braids, sew-ins or big chop (well she did BC but after a long-term transition).

So when I started stretching my relaxers, I noticed that my NG was easier and easier to deal with. And when I would get relaxed my hair was too straight for about the first month. I couldn't wait for my NG to come back.

Of course, being on LHCF with so many naturals was an influence as well. The encouraging thing is that there are quite a few naturals who wear their hair straight most of the time. So I started stalking, I mean, looking at various posts about natural haircare, transitioning and transitioning hairstyles. I saw some hair I liked and quite frankly, some I didn't. So I was a bit conflicted as to whether or not transitioning would work for me.

The main concern, however, was what in the ham sandwich would my natural texture look like? I received my first relaxer at 5 years old....I've literally been relaxed my ENTIRE life...LOL

The only pictures I have of my natural texture are when I was a little girl, a toddler really. I do know that when cared for properly, my hair can be thick. But how that translates into the natural world, I'm not so sure. I suspect I'm a 4 hair type (kinky coily), which can be a beast to straighten.

So many things to consider: shine, slip, ease of combing, finding a hairstylist that can deal with my transition and my natural hair, texture, FRIZZ, etc. I have thought, thought, pondered, weighed the options, counter argued and I can't seem to shake my desire to transition to natural hair.

The stars aligned this past Thursday when Mane and Chic did her Thursday Transitioners post. It gave a list of questions to think about, products to use, things to consider when going natural. Considering over half the things on the list I either own or are techniques I currently do, I pretty much realized that the decision was made...

Sooooooooo, as of May 1, 2009 I will stretch my relaxer indefinitely (LOL @ giving myself an out).

Now not to alienate any of my other soon-to-be natural sisters, but I will not "forget from whence I've come" and become the Natural Nazi. Relaxers (when cared for properly) gave me many good years of great hair. And I love relaxed and texlaxed hair. So for my relaxed sisters out there, don't think I'm going to all of a sudden flip the script on you. Beautiful (translation: HEALTHY) hair is beautiful hair, no matter the texture or whether it's achieved via relaxer or in its natural texture.

Mane and Chic gave some questions to think about when making the decision to transition...below are my answers.

How often can you wash?

2-3 times a week

Are you going to trim, how often?

I'm not 100% sure, but no more than 4 times a year. There is a transition where you gradually trim relaxed ends, I may end up doing that.

How often do you want to deep condition?

2-3 times a week, essentially everytime I wash. That's what will keep my new growth manageable.

Are you going to straighten, how often?

Yes, I'm going to straighten. Mostly with rollersetting, but I'm not above flat ironing my roots. LOL

How will you straighten if you decide to do so -- roller sets, hot combs, flat irons, etc.?

All of the above, even the etc. LOL

Are you going to do protein treatments, how often?

Monthly when I clarify.

Will you use shampoo or just conditioner, apple cider vinegar or herbs to wash?

Wash with diluted shampoo whenever I feel my hair has product build up. Clarify monthly. Co-wash in between times. I want to try ACV rinses as well.

Are you going to protect your hair when you sleep?

Yes with satin bonnet and/or satin pillowcases.

How will you moisturize your hair?

I don't know, that's one thing I need to figure out. I do know I will more than likely seal with castor oil.

Are you going to pre-wash your hair?

I usually DC on dry hair, but I will probably now add a pre-poo with EVOO (olive oil).

Are you going to do scalp massages, how often?

Yes, when I remember.

What are your go-to styles going to be -- braid-outs, curl former sets, buns, etc.?

Figuring that out too, but more than likely rollersets. In the next couple of weeks I will try flexi-rod sets and perm rod sets. We'll just see what happens from there...

So that's that folks, I am among the women who are transitioning. I will do my best to post as regularly as possible with updates, styles, inspirations, etc. I will be as balanced as I can with the styles, although for a few days it may be a little natural hairstyle heavy as I am now compiling my inspiration pics.

I have a myriad of emotions, uncertainty, nervous, excited, impatient (wish I could be natural tomorrow). Should be an interesting journey. I'm glad I have my blog friends and family to walk with me...

Pincurls Do the Trick

I've tried pincurls before and thought they looked crazy when I combed them out. I am currently wearing a flip and was too tired to roll it last night and didn't feel like getting up early this morning to do a dry rollerset (which by the way is GREAT). So while watching hair videos on YouTube, I found one on pincurling flips. So I decided to try it. Here is what happened this morning after sleeping on pincurls last night...

Because I need to wash, the ends are a bit frizzier than I would like, but I'm pretty pleased with the results...definitely something I will continue to perfect and do again...

Ok, my lovelies...I'm back again! I've been away for a while because my schedule became really hectic due to my latest accomplishment....going through Membership Intake for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.! Yes, I'm proud to be a devastating diva of the largest women's organization in the world!

How does this relate to Haute & Hair you might ask? Well in celebration of crossing, I cut my hair! Yes, I know...I'm supposed to be growing my hair out. Well I grew weary of my hair having no style, so I decided to cut it into a style. Here it is...

I'm pleased with my cut and ready to continue growing. I will probably keep the layers and keep growing.

Haute & Hair: The Emergency Hair Kit

I can't tell you the number of times I've been at work or out somewhere and received a call to go out to dinner, movies, etc. One look in the mirror and my first response should have been, "heck nah! have you seen my hair?!" I've left wherever I was early to rush home and try to do something to my hair so I look more presentable. The last time I couldn't go home and spent about $10 in "emergency" hair care items. It was at that point that I vowed never to be caught unprepared like that again, if I could help it. So I decided to create my Travel & Emergency Hair Kit (I will have to think of a cuter name for it). Here is the beginning of my kit...

The purpose of this kit is to have a few things on hand that I can leave in my car, take into work or just have on hand to freshen or restyle my hair. This kit isn't complete, but here's an upclose look at its contents so far:

Bobby and hair pins (in plastic baggie)
Aloe Vera gel
Stay Sof Fro (good ol' fashion afro sheen) used for smoothing down edges
Hair clips (to section hair or move out of way)
Paddle brush
Boar brush (for smoothing)
Rattail comb (for parting)
Hair elastics
Oil mix (EVOO, Ultimate Best oil, Nature's Shine)
Scarf for smoothing edges (not shown because it was being washed)

There are a few things that I want to add to the kit

Phony Bun
Phony pony
Half Wig (my ol standby, the Outre Ursula)
Hot Rollers
Flat Iron
Hair jewelry (headbands, flowers, hair candy, etc.)

For those of you that live in larger cities and don't drive, you can keep a similar kit in your desk drawer or locker at work. You may have to put your supplies in smaller containers in a smaller storage box, but you could essentially get the same effect.

This kit has already taken up residence in my trunk...never will I be unprepared again in a hair emergency...:)

Haute & Hair: I Like Big Hair

I'm a child of the 80s...so big hair is in my genes!

The picture to the right was taken in the 90s, but big hair was still in style then. Yeah, I know....LOL

Every once in a while I truly like the super sleek, ultra flat look. But more often than not, the bigger, fluffier, fuller, curlier it is, the better!!!!

So when I saw this pic of Solange (below), I fell in love. And the eye makeup is the truth, the lips I can do without (would like it better with a nude lip I think).
I have this half-wig by Outre (Gladys), but mine is longer. It has just about the fullness of Solange's hair, but not quite the curl.

Setting a human hair wig or half wig on small flexi rods or perm rods will achieve this look beautifully!

Of you can try this lacefront wig...I've seen this on some women in LHCF, Beverly does NOT do this wig justice!

I like the fact that she didn't take out her braids for the one-night affair. Although this is the biggest night in Hollywood, she chose not to succumb to the pressure to have a perfectly coiffed do and decided to make a classy hairstyle with her braids. From a distance you cannot really tell they are braids, it looks likes she's wearing a classic low ponytail. The simplicity of the do minimizes the appearance of the braids.

So there is no need to take out braids for a formal function, braids can be formal!

While chatting online with my BFF over at A Life of Style she told me about the latest White House Event hosted by the Obama's (that would be MY President and First Lady). Well the hairstyle she rocked last night, rocked the house!!!!!!!!

We discussed possible ways to achieve this style and one sure fire way is a set on hot rollers. Don't forget to spray hair with heat protectant. I heart this one, Silk Elements Heat Protection Spray available at Sally's....

You may want to try setting vertically on jumbo rollers and putting a hair net over while you get dressed. You should be able to finger comb and brush into the style. This style is not meant to be perfect, it's perfection is in its looking slightly tousled. Finish lightly with a shine spray or light oil sheen and you have EFFORTLESS (yeah right) STYLE!

You can also try a rollerset on larger rollers. Here is the size I recommend.

Do not use snap-on (creases). Use the anchor method (search youtube for this, Buildable Beauty's is the best tutorial I've seen). Use a light hand with products, you may just want to set with water. That way you will get the fluffiest, swangest (yes, that's a word) set. And I think this set will look better on Day 2 and freshened up with hot rollers if needed (unless you're on a no-heat diet).

This style is best done on shoulder-length (SL) or collarbone length (CBL) hair. This is going to be a PERFECT spring do after hiding your hair and covering it up all winter long. I'm going to practice it and unveil it soon...stay tuned!

Ok, this color is fire! I usually am not a fan of irridescent colors, but this one is like butter! I really like it. My sorry camera phone really doesn't do it justice. This will definitely be a color that I rock during football season next fall (my alma mater (and employer) colors are purple and gold). This is a nice shade that can also pass for wine or magenta depending on what it's put up against and the way the light hits it.

This video shows a really neat way to make a homemade hair bungee (non-homemade version to the right). The homemade one does the same thing as the one you can purchase (watch the video). This is especially useful for my H&H sisters with thick hair...ENJOY!

He demonstartes a good way of getting a sleek ponytail with no sagging in the back. I don't know about the warm salt water part, but everything else I can get with.

Love mascara!!!! Love, Love, Love it! Nothing makes your eyes pop like a good ol' mascara! My eye makeup is not complete until and unless I glide on two coats of this dark piece of makeup heaven.

I try out different mascaras from time to time. My faves are good ol' Maybelline Great Lash (in the pink and green tube) and all of the ones by Lancome (take your pick, they've all done well by me!).

But in a drugstore buying mood, one day I decided to try Maybelline's Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara.

I like the fuschia pink tube so I was excited to try it out. Um, so why did I feel like a 3 year old trying to open a jar when I tried to pull the wand out of the tube....it was soooooooooo hard to get out!!!!

Once I did get it out, the application was great and it did add volume to my lashes. But I literally began to dread having to put on my mascara because this tube made it so hard to get out.

And let's not even talk about trying to put it back in the tube. That took longer than getting it out. The wand would bend and I'd have the darndest time trying to get the wand back in the tube.

As karma would have it, one morning while trying to put the wand back in for my 2nd coat, the applicator brush literally BROKE from the wand....so so much for that. I wasn't too upset though because I was just using it up and then going right back to the department store for my Lancome!

So this is another thumbs down review for me....

I am a lip gloss, and lip moisturizer ADDICT. I usually keep 2-3 on hand at any given time. My fave of course is MAC's lip moisturizer

But every once in a while, I will check out a drug store brand to see if anything comes close to the moisturizing, oh so yummy smelling and tasting MAC lip conditioner.

I've been seeing the Nivea commercials and decided to try it.

In the immortal words of two of my favorite reviewers....

HATED IT!!!!!!

It didn't moisturize my lips AT ALL! They felt sorta like I put lotion on my lips. And the taste?!?!?! Why did it taste like I had just washed my lips with Ivory soap?!?!!?!?

This product is definintely TWO THUMBS DOWN!!!!

*Off to the MAC counter I go.....

Haute & Hair: Gain an Edge Over Stinky Hair

Ever have "stinky hair?" Not because you don't wash your hair often enough or anything (I know my Nikko's cousins know better *hands on hips*). I mean it appears that your hair absorbs odors from smoke, food, etc. You make yourself dizzy spinning around in circles trying to figure out where the smell is coming from (ok, well I hope you don't do that...LOL).

Well here is a solution...run over your hair with a Gain dryer sheet. Not only does it minimize static cling in hair (although our texture of hair doesn't have it to often); but it also freshens the hair. This is a good trick if you do have to postpone your wash day by a day or two. But please be warned that it does NOTHING for dandruff, dirt, dry scalp, etc. Ewwwwww...

So I have a box of gain dryer sheets in bathroom. I most frequently use it when I use heat to minimize any smells associated with that appliance.

Try it and let me know if you can smell a difference...I know I did!

I Need More Than Water

So I co-washed and reset my hair last night. But this time I wanted to try it using just water to set. I usually use a setting lotion mix. All other things were equal, but my roller wrap didn't come out nearly as well as I'd like...so bad that I refuse to post pics...LOL

So I'm at work debating whether or not I'm going to reset tonight when I get home.

Lesson learned: I need more than water to set my hair.

Rollerwrap using Anchor Method

I pretty proficient at rollersetting. A couple of rollersetting challenges will definitely help with that. However, I was never good at using clips in my hair. So I became resigned to having creases in my hair. This made doing a smooth, silky rollerwrap nearly impossible.

While on LHCF one day, there was a thread on the anchor method. Since that day was my wash day, I decided to try it. So I watched Buildable Beauty's youtube video a couple of times and embarked on a new rollersetting adventure.

And boy what an adventure it was! Since this was my first time doing it, it took nearly 25 minutes LONGER than my normal rollersetting time (which is pretty lengthy to begin with--30-40 minutes). So over an hour later I finally sat under the dryer. Well, imagine my suprprise and disappointment when after my normal hour and 15 minutes of drying time my hair still wasn't dry. So I sat under the dryer an additional 45 minutes before my hair was dry.

But I won't totally bore you with the details of my numb butt after 2 hours under the dryer. Here's my process:

Pre-pooed with cheapie conditioner and oil
Shampooed with diluted shampoo in color applicator bottle and co-washed
DCed with Motions CPR and oil
Rinsed and towel-dried
Applied Lacio Lacio leave-in

After I was dry, I removed rollers, sprayed with ORS Olive Oil Sheen and wrapped overnight. Here are the results...

Not exactly sure how I feel about it. It's ok for a first attempt I guess...Some of the rollers weren't as tight as I wanted...especially the anchor rollers. I guess I'm not pinning it in the right place.

Things I will do differently next time...

Just water setting lotion
Steam treatment (using Sam Jones homemade method)
Smaller rollers for more curl
Not so much oil sheen (i like the shine at first, but it weight it down a bit)

I actually look forward to trying this again soon. It's Day 2 and it still looks really good!

The Way I Wash

For the past few months I've been on the co-wash kick. I actually like it and how nice my hair smells afterwards. I can no longer stand my hair smelling at all!!!! It drives me CRAZY...

But I was wondering how clean my scalp was getting. I didn't really want to wash all that often (except when I go to the salon) because I didn't want to strip my hair too much. And then one day I was reading Mane and Chic's blog and the answer appeared (insert heavenly angelic chorus here)...

Shampoo your scalp not your hair. If you're going to use a sulfate shampoo, try diluting it with filtered water and use a color applicator bottle so that the shampoo only gets to your scalp.

So I started doing this January 2, 2009. And can I tell you that I love it! I use a skinny point applicator bottle

and apply diluted shampoo (last time I added a drop of peppermint oil because I was having some itching) directly to my scalp and massage.

I get the cleanliness I desire, without draying out my hair. This is definitely a staple for me in 09!!!!!

Bridal Hair Candy...

I coordinated my cousin's wedding, which was held December 20, 2008.

The veil she chose was beautiful, but very, very long! Her dress was absolutely stunning, especially from the back, so we wanted an opportunity to showcase the dress. So I came up with the idea of making some hair candy, or a hair fascinator.

When she arrived at the reception, her hairstylist updated her hair and added the hair accessory.

So for about $10 she had an amazing hair accessory that incorporated flowers from her bouquet and peacock feathers. I didn't do a bad job, if I do say so myself...LOL

My LHCF One Year "Hairaversary"

It has been too long since I've posted! The wedding is over and it was beautiful. I will post some pics later...

In the meantime, I celebrated my 1 Year Hairaversary with LHCF. One year ago on December 27 I began my healthy hair care journey. Thankfully I haven't had too many setbacks (just not getting as much length as I'd hope). It has been a wonderful journey and I look forward to it in the next year. I hope to full APL (armpit length) and well on my way to BSL (brastrap length) by this time next year. I will begin to post more on my New Year Hair Resolutions and what I decide to do about my regimen (if I decide to tweak it).

Haute & Hair: Recommitment to Hair Care Regimen

Ok so I have a confession to make...I slacked majorly on my hair care regimen this last 9 weeks. No vitamins, no MN, more heat than I've used in 6 months, etc.

But I'm back on the bandwagon. Especially after I got my relaxer last week. Yes my hair did grow, but the middle of my hair is weak. It's soft, strong and relatively healthy, but not quite as long as I had hoped. I didn't retain as much length as I think I would have if I would have continued my regimen.

So I'm back on it ladies and gentlemen...stay tuned for what I hope to be some tremendous results when I get my next relaxer in December!

Vitamin C (Spring Valley), 1000 mg: A natural antihistamine. Essential for healthy teeth, gums and bones. Aids in absorption of iron. Major antioxidant nutrient.

So I went to the drugstore and invested in a pill carrier. I have the one below. It just holds all the vitamins I carry. I really can't add another one...LOL

Using this has enabled me to take my vitamins after a meal wherever I am: work, restaurant, home, etc. For me that has been the key to sticking to my vitamin regimen.

I restocked my vitamin carrier yesterday and am restarting this part of my regimen.

Ok, so clearly Essence didn't read my open letter to them a couple of weeks ago...*sigh*

I have no words other than to say that I'm officially and totally DONE with Essence. Even if I do like some of their magazine articles, clothes or hairstyles, I can no longer take their total and complete LACK of creativity.

It saddens me to the core of my being that I no longer feel compelled to support what was once a cutting edge magazine for black women.

If you feel similarly, I urge you to write Essence.

Haute & Hair: Be the Change

This weekend was pretty interesting at work. My state, North Carolina, is a battleground state in the elections and the National Democratic Party have really been sending quite a few resources as well as people to our state. Obama has been here quite a few times, and has been on the campus of my alma mater and place of employment, East Carolina University.

This weekend, three celebrities came on campus to encourage students and the community to register and vote. Friday, it began with Journee Smollett from The Great Debaters. First, let me tell you she is BEAU-TI-FUL and SKIN-TY!!!! LOL

And her hair is hot too (as you can tell). There was a DJ and she came in dancing...she was bright, funny and charming.

Sunday, Ellen Pompeo from Grey's Anatomy and the daughter on CBS's Shark came (I don't feel like googling to find her name...lol). So I must say that I feel like my BSP (Black Star Power) has risen a point or two...LMBO!

Anyway, it's 2:34 AM and I'm really supposed to be tying these dang boxes for the fashion show on Tuesday. What fashion show do you ask? Well I'm on the Board of Directors for our local domestic violence program and our signature event is a fashion show. Our theme this year is "Sassy in the City" (guess what movie was the inspiration for that theme????).

Anyhoo I'm gonna wrap a few more boxes, then I'm turning it in. I'll just wrap more at work tomorrow...oops, did I say that?!?! LOL

Relax every 9 weeks (may eventually stretch to 10 or 12)
Vitamins: biotin, MSM, b-complex, folic acid, women's multi, l-lysiene
Minimal heat (usually just hooded dryer)
MN mixture

The picture charts my hair growth since embarking on this journey in December, 2007. I'm glad I updated this because i was beginning to get discouraged. I am trying to reach Armpit Length (APL) by the end of the year, but unless I go for the spinster librarian look, I don't think that's going to happen. But after updating my signature pics, I can see a noticeable difference in the strength, texture and length of my hair.

Over the coming days and weeks, I will begin to break down my reggie (short for regimen) and give you some things that have worked for me along the way.

Hairstyle of the Day

I adore this hairstyle! Of course I'm a huge Angela Bassett fan anyway. I think this is a great style to rock as your rollerset begins to fall and "get old." I think you pretty much finger comb this into the style (for those who are doing a low-manipulation regimen), with maybe some light brushing for smoothness.

This is a great evening look, or if you're going for a sexy librarian look...I love those!

Product Review: Intimately Her by Victoria Beckham

My blogger BFF recently posted about Victoria Beckham's new perfume, Intimately Her.

I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with Vikki. I love her style most of the time, but hate that she's so doggone slim...LOL.

I had heard that she was coming out with a perfume, but I figured with her high-priced taste it would only be sold in Bergdorf's or such. So I didn't really pay any attention until I read the blog post. So I stopped by to smell the new scent at my local Walgreens. It was very musky and seductive. There was a hint of flowers, a hint of sandalwood, a hint of musk...all depends on which spot it was on and which angle you sniffed. At first, I was a bit apprehensive because I'm the consummate clean and citrusy scent gal. So I only bought the .99 trial size.

The next morning I put it on and can I tell you that it immediately increased my personal sex appeal. All day long people were telling me how good I smelled, especially men. I work at a college, so this may not be the best scent to wear around college boys...LOL

But this is definitely going in my bag for my weekend for my S.O. This is so the date-night scent.

Open Letter to Essence Magazine

I originally wrote this letter on August 8, 2006 on Myspace. After seeing the 3rd year in a row with MoNique on the cover, I am sad to say that it's still appropriate.

Dear Essence,

I have been an avid reader of your magazine since I was a young teenager. The covers with Iman, Beverly Johnson, Oprah and other notable and beautiful woman often caused me to shut myself in my room to devour the entire issue from cover to cover. Although I have an abundance of female guidance from my grandmother, mother, aunts and cousins, I learned a lot about fashion, makeup, hair and other things from Essence.

This is why it grieves my heart to have to tell you that Essence is seriously slipping in choice of cover models. Yet ANOTHER Monique Cover for 2008!?!?!?!. Two years ago in 2006, you had her on the cover twice in less than 8 months. Trust me, your readers' memories are not that short. And I bet good money that you will have Bey on the cover since her album drops in November. Yes I know with her new album coming out, B is hot. However, she is not the only celebrity out there.

I feel that you are intentionally alienating the more mature and culturally diverse demographic of your magazine. Those of us age 30 and older have more diverse tastes than just Monique, Mary J. Blige (although I love her) and Beyonce. You barely acknowledge artists like India.Arie, Jaguar Wright, Wayna, Corrine Bailey Rae, etc. These most talented artists will never move into the mainstream unless they are acknowledged by magazines such as Essence. And let's not even get me started on your choice of actresses. I really need for Mikki Taylor and those who choose the covers to broaden their view, scope and thus portrayal of women of color. Please get your heads out of the sand and out of People, Us and the Enquirer and look for artists and celebrities that truly and accurately represent the vast Diaspora of the African American culture. Because to be quite frank, Beyonce does not represent me.

Now I would never criticize you without giving you alternatives, so in addition to the artists I named above, here are some others:

Angela Bassett
The star of the Broadway Color Purple (I'm not sure of her name)
The ORIGINAL Dreamgirls with the current people TRYING to portray them (and have "Beyonce and them" give homage to them)
The Original Divas: Lena Horne, Dihann Carroll, Nancy Wilson, etc.

Where are they now (Regina Belle, Allison Williams, Angela Winbush, etc.)
Selita Eubanks
Halle Berry (I'm not sure how many she's been on, but it hasn't been alot)

I would prefer if Essence was a trend setter and not a trend follower. And with the proliferation of a very limited number of celebrities (akin to mainstream media), you are just following the pack. Come on Essence, people in publishing are supposed to be creative...so let's get those juices flowing and come up with some other cover choices!!!!!!!!!!

Model in a Bottle

My blogger BFF, Kim, turned me on to this product about 2 and a half years ago after seeing it on Tyra.

Prior to that time, I have always complained of my "nose shining" and my makeup just looking unkept and not fresh by mid-day. I've tried everything from blot papers to powders. All provided temporary relief, but I was having to use them throughout the day. I wanted something that could keep my face "just applied fresh" all day long.

So I purchased Model in a Bottle and have been a loyal fan ever since. I even bought it for all of my girlfriends for Christmas.

I spray my face twice, before I apply makeup and very lightly after. My makeup stays put all day long. I don't have to blot, powder, re-apply anything (except for gloss).

This is one of my staple products...I do recommend for all us "shiny" girls....

Don't Believe the Hype!!!!

Ok, I love, love, love Scandalous Beauty. She pretty much reignited my love of makeup and beauty products. But I have to respectfully disagree with her on her latest post on Essence.com.

Actually, I do love Essence.com's hair gallery...in fact it's bookmarked on the side. However, they are somewhat insulting my intelligence with their autumn hair guide, which is just recycled pictures from past seasons or hair guides. IMO, it's hype. But that's because I have my own issues with Essence in general as of late (but that's a separate post).

Speaking of hype, everyone is going ga-ga over Rhianna's hair. Um, hate to burst the bubble of those who think she is a style icon, but does this look familiar??? Just more proof that style and fashion is cyclical. So please ladies, let's not get short-term memory and think that people like Rhianna and Beyonce are doing something new and thus are trendsetters.

What's In My Setting Lotion Bottle

Here's what's in my setting lotion bottle:

Distilled Water

Lacio Lacio

Silk Amino Acid

Olive Oil (about a tablespoon)

After using this concoction, I usually do not have to add any other products to my hair (no moisturizer or oil or anything). Below are a couple of examples of my rollersets as a result of using this.

Rolling Over Puffy eyes

While stuck in a parking garage for an hour waiting to leave a football game, I started reading an issue of Elle (I don't know what month it was since I'm sooooooooooooo behind in magazine reading. In this issue there was an article talking about the use of caffeine and metal in eye products. Because it's Elle, they had 2 expensive products, but one that was reasonably priced was Garnier Nutrioniste's Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller.

So that night I went out to purchase. Used it that night during my night-time reggie. Used it again in the moring (I was up late that night as well). It definitely helped my under eye area looked refreshed and renewed (after being up so late). I don't have as much puffiness as I do dark circles. It didn't immediately diminish those, but it did just make my under eye area look smoother and minimized the fine lines. It helped the concealer go on much smoother and I actually didn't have to use as much.

I do use this in tandem with my Olay Age Defying Revitalizing Eye Gel. My eyes look better than they have in a very long time! I'm not sure if this will be a staple product, but I'm not sorry I bought it and would definitely use it again!

Michelle Obama's Hair...

I can't believe I haven't commented on this yet...I'm slipping! LOL

Michelle Obama's hair during her speech at the DNC was FIERCE!!! I mean the slightest turn of her head and I swear I heard, "SWOOSH, SWOOSH, SWOOSH!" Healthy, shiny, body, life, movement, etc. can all be words to accurately describe her hair.

I of course am huge fan of per personally, stylistically and hair-ily (yeah, I just made up that word...LOL).

But when I found out she was natural, I nearly lost it (The article link is below)!!! So of course I had to try it on my relaxed tresses to see if the process actually worked.

Ladies, let me tell you...it worked for me!!! And at the time I did it I was 5 weeks post.

Here's what I did:

Co-washed with Motions CPR Protein Conditioner and Alberto VO5 Volume Conditioner

Steam Treatment with Motions CPR Protein Condition

Dime-size of Lacio Lacio and Chi Silk Reconstructor (adjust based on hair length--a very small amount)

I'm going to give you two ways to do the rest of the styling process: a High-Heat Method and a Low-Heat Method

High Heat

Hood Dry for 10 minutes
Section hair in 4 parts (front to back and ear to ear)
Blow dry on low with paddle brush and regular ol' dryer
Keep hair sectioned or resection
Flat iron in approximately 1" x 1/2" sections (in other words, not too big). I usually start from the back and work forwards
Use 1" or larger curling iron to curl hair all over (adjust size of iron by hair length especially the crown for heighth and body)
Wrap hair
Cover hair in saran wrap
Hair dryer for 5-10 minutes ( I recommend 5 so that the curls are still there)
Comb down and style as usual

Low Heat

Section Hair in mo-hawk style for rollersetting
Roll hair using setting lotion (I will post what's in my setting lotion bottle momentarily) and the "roll, roll, pull" method (to ensure maximum stretch of any new growth). I'd suggest using the largest roller that your hair will allow(based on its length), especially in the crown. I think I could use this size. Look on You-tube for Rollersetting Tutorials, or better yet, purchase Machiere's!!!!!
Air or hood dry
Remove rollers
Wrap Hair
Cover in plastic wrap
Hair dryer for 5-10 minutes ( I recommend 5 so that the curls are still there)
Comb down and style as usual

I used the High-Heat Method (a major no-no for me since I'm growing it out) and here's how it came out...

A Life of Style: Personal Cards

A few weeks ago my friend met a guy while she was in Barnes & Noble. They had a really nice chat and when it came time to exchange phone numbers, she ripped a half sheet of paper from her notebook to write her name and number on. She was excited to get to know him better and was sure he would call within a day or two.

Well he didn't make the first call, she had to call him. He informed her that he was glad she called because he misplaced the paper her number was written on. I told her if she had some cute personal cards like yours truly...he probably wouldn't have lost her number.

Do you know how much random paper you can collect in a day???? Do yourself a favor and make some eye catching personal cards. I only use my business cards for professional events. I never feel comfortable giving a potential suitor my work information right in the beginning.
This is where a personal card comes in handy.

I just have mine printed with my first name, mobile number, and email address. If the guy turns out to be a dud or worse (a stalker), I can easily block his email address and phone number.

The Best $2-3 You Will Spend on Hair Care

I sleep wild...very wild!!!! All over the bed; under the cover, on top of cover....I'm never quite sure how I will wake up the next day. Needless to say, this is problematic for me while trying to protect and hide my hair. Because after a night of wild sleeping I wake up with my hair on top of my head and uncovered. I've tried every type of product known to man, so of course of I was skeptical when this product was recommended on LHCF.

I purchased it at Wal-Mart a few days ago. And can I tell you that I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the first time I have found a head cover that stays on all night. Through tossing and turning, flipping and flopping...it stays completely on.

If you purchase this and it doesn't work, you clearly sleep wilder than I do (if that is possible). You might want to get that checked...LOL

The only CON I see with this product...it's a head cover! It's hard to be cute (when going to bed with your DH or SO) when wearing most any head covering, especially one that is meant to protect as opposed to one for fashion. But if that's the only thing that I can find wrong with it, then I'll suffer through it...

I truly believe this is the best $2-3 you can ever spend on hair care...I don't think you will be sorry!

In My Lifetime...

My parents remember where they were when Kennedy was assassinated.

They and others remember what they were doing when they heard the news that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.

For the first time in my life, I have one of those memories. In a few years, I will be able to tell my children and (many, many years later) grandchildren where I was when the first black man received the Democratic nomination for the President of the United States!!!!!

Granted, it's not the most romantic of locations. I'm sitting at my desk at work eating chilli-cheese fries and drinking Sunkist....LOL. But the moment is mine and it's still powerful.
I'm emotional, proud, nervous, excited, expectant and about a thousand other emotions over the next few months and the future of our country. It's an exciting time to be an American and an even more exciting time to be an African American!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna know how you can hear this phrase well into the day? Follow these tips for layering your scent and you won't be disappointed (thanks Bublin on LHCF!!!!!).

*Tip: Purchase the most expensive fragrance you can afford. Purchase it in a gift set if you can (which will come with body spray and lotion hopefully).

Shower/bathe yourself and then dry off as usual.
Spray the body spray on all over
Spray the eau de toilette all over
Spray the eau de Parfum on pulse points
Use the matching body lotion

Putting the lotion on last seals in the fragrance. Let me know how it works for you!
